Eczema can cause misery in small children

There are many different types of eczema in babies. There are also many causes this irritating and unseemly condition in babies. Some of the causes of eczema in babies are easily diagnosed while other causes may never be discovered. Many experts believe that it is inherited through genetic links to parents who also have eczema. One of the primary problems associated with diagnosing is that the exact cause of eczema is rarely known.

There are many possible influences that can be linked to babies developing outbreaks of eczema. Besides the genetic link, there are potential concern for allergens. Allergens may be caused by internal or external factors. An example of an external factor would be dietary allergens that could cause the condition to appear in babies or small children. Dietary allergens may come from food consumed by the infant or even from breast milk.

15-25 percent of babies and small children are diagnosed with eczema. This makes eczema in babies a fairly common occurrence. Most cases (65 percent) of eczema develops within the first year of life. Up to 90 percent of all diagnosed cases of eczema in children occurs before the age of five. In cases where eczema has been resolved the resolution has occurred by age 2. Of all the diagnosed cases , roughly 60 percent, continues into adulthood.

There are several issues that can be problematic with eczema in babies. The first concern is bacterial infections. Open sores or rashes caused by eczema can be an entry source of bacteria. Healthy skin is a major component of the immune systems. Since eczema, in adults as well as babies, tends to be a condition associated with dry skin, babies and small children can become dehydrated. Dehydration can be an issue especially if the sores or rash is weepy or infected.

Another problem is itchy skin.The affected area  can be mildly itchy or severely itchy. The itchy skin causes a great deal of discomfort and can lead to scratching and infections such as infantigo. Chronic scratching maybe be a symptom that is seen more in cases of eczema in children than in cases often found in babies.

It is always best to follow the advice of a dermatologist who is familiar with treating and diagnosing eczema . This is especially true when the cause of the eczema in babies is not clear.
